“I was really angry at the manager (Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s coach) that he put me on the bench.” Liverpool Hero, Georginio Wijnaldum revealed after inspiring the win that paved their entry into the UEFA Champions League Finals.
In the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League 2018/2018 season, Liverpool FC was tied against Barcelona FC. Pep Guardiola, one of the best football managers had previously stated that the best two teams he had ever faced in his career were these two teams. Needless to say that the game was indeed going to be a clash of the Titans.
Unfortunately, Liverpool had to play without their injured striker, Roberto Firmino at the 1st leg at Barcelona and that striking responsibility was to be given to a midfielder, Georginio, a role he wasn’t familiar with. Eventually, Liverpool lost 3 – 0 to Barcelona even though they played much better than the hosts who were more profilic with the few opportunities they had.
Though a 2nd leg was to scheduled a week later at Anfield (Liverpool’s stadium), overturning a 3-goal deficit against Barcelona seemed insurmountable. As if that wasn’t enough, their greatest force, Mohammed Salah also got on the sidelines with Firmino. So the world wasn’t expecting much against a team that had Lionel Messi, the supposed Greatest Player Of All Time.
Consequently, Klopp did not have much options and since Georginio had flopped when the team needed him the most, he was replaced with another promising player. Thus, this infuriated the Georginio as he became disappointed at the Coach for losing faith in him.
After an underwhelming first half that produced just one goal, the Coach decided to give Georginio a second chance in the 2nd half. Lo and behold, he netted 2 goals in just 10 minutes of his arrival, inspiring his team to knock out Barcelona in the league. So during his post match interview, Georginio let the cat out of the bag by admitting that his anger was the driving force behind his goals as he needed to make a statement.
Being angry is not necessarily bad because it comes with a force that can be put to effective use. Thus, how you channel that force is what matters. So the next time you are dissatisfied by your situation, remember these words of Malcolm X that says, “Usually when people are sad, they don’t do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change.”
So don’t just get sad, get angry!
